New Boys Soccer Coach Named
Christian Academy of Indiana is pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Deary as the Head Boys Soccer Coach. Paul comes to Christian Academy with a wealth of experience as a player and a coach with over 11 years of experience as a player (four of those years in South Africa) and four years as a high school assistant coach in Florida. Paul looks forward to developing a program for CAI, a school he has grown to love over the years. Currently, Paul serves as the pastor of Hillside Church in New Albany, IN.
Coach Deary says, “I am most excited to coach at CAI to see the young men reach their potential in Christ, as well as on the soccer pitch. One thing I’ve seen about this generation is that they believe they can accomplish anything. I hope to bring that mentality to the soccer field. That, as a team, we can accomplish great things – especially as we seek God in the process.”
As the program approaches their season this fall, Coach Deary is excited to begin working with the team in developing their skills and love for the game. “I am looking forward to this upcoming season for a couple reasons. My hope is to build upon the past created by past teams and coaches, and help move the team and individual players forward in their skill and knowledge of the game. The second reason I’m excited is to help create a culture where players give it their all to accomplish great things,” says Coach Deary.
CAI Director of Athletics, Stephanie Gillett says, “Paul is going to be a great addition to our coaching staff here at CAI! His strength in leadership and passion for soccer is a great combination to help the young men in our program develop as athletes and Christian men. What he can do with our program is exciting and we look forward to the growth of our program as a result of his leadership.”
Last season, Warrior Boys Soccer competed in the Sectional finals and they look to grow on that performance and bring home a Sectional title!
CAI Female Runners Show Strength at Sectional Meet
On Tuesday night, in the midst of continuous rainfall and cold weather, the Lady Warriors continued to show their strength on the track. In the 100M Dash, senior, Brittany Albert showed her speed, finishing 2nd and qualifying for Regionals. Later in the evening, freshman McKenna Cavanaugh found herself a tight race in the 1600M. She was running side-by-side with a runner from Floyd Central. In the final stretch, McKenna put on the afterburners and passed by the FC runner to finish first and be named the Sectional Champion! A little while later, McKenna found herself in another side-by-side race with the same Floyd Central runner, this time in the 3200M. Again, McKenna showed her speed in the final stretch and earned another Sectional Championship! McKenna and Brittany will both continue on to race in Regionals.
Three Ink Commitments to Extend Playing Days
CAI has three more Warriors to add to the ranks of those playing in college. Nic Reed, Josiah Koenig and Garrett Couch all signed their college commitments thus extending their playing days for a little longer. Congratulations to each of them and their families!
Nic Reed signed with NAIA Olivet to play basketball.

Josiah Koenig signed with NAIA Indiana Weslyan to play baseball.

Garrett Couch signed to play soccer for Division II Alderson Broadus.

Different Location, Same Results…Records Fall
This past Friday and Saturday the track team continued its assault on the record books. Skylar Stidam and McKenna Cavanaugh, apparently not happy with their recently set records, went ahead and broke them again. Skylar ran the 1600m in 4:28.46, after stopping on the course to help a fallen competitor, and then on Saturday ran the 3200m, beating Borden’s U of L signee Julian Manganelles, in 9:38. McKenna Cavanaugh again broke the 1600m record by running a 5:12.03.
While the track team has been strong in the distance events this year they now have a record setter in the sprints. Senior Brittany Albert added her name to the record books by breaking the 100m and 200m records.
CAI Tennis Continues Unbeaten After Win at Jeffersonville
After a win Tuesday against CAL, Christian Academy of Indiana continued its winning ways Thursday against Jeffersonville. The close match, CAI 4-3, is the second in row where the match was decided by the play of extra sets. Under pressure so far, the girls have really been able to step up and finish. Lauren Winchell won at #1 singles, Julia Lostutter won at #3 singles, Brittany Moffett and Danielle Summitt won at #1 doubles, and Lindsey Bilkey and Maddie Brown won at #2 doubles. CAI travels to Borden on Monday.
Record Setting Season; We’ve Only Just Begun!
This young track season has already seen a number of CAI runners set personal records and a number of school records fall. This past Saturday, in less than ideal conditions, this trend continued. Freshman Devin Mielke set personal records in the 200m and the 400m, freshman Levi Doty set a PR in the shot put, and freshmen Grant Kalkenbrenner and Graham Gregory both set PR’s in the long jump. McKenna Cavanaugh continued having her way with decisive wins in the 1600m and the 3200m and sophomore Skylar Stidam broke the 3200m school record which he set by running a 9:51.57. With a number of other records expected to fall this year due to the most talented team CAI has ever fielded, a new Record Board is definitely going to be needed.
Warrior Nic Reed Makes the List
It is well known that Indiana High School basketball has no peer or rival. Simply put, it’s the best high school basketball in the world with the most rabid fans. To be considered as one of the best in this state is a feat worth noting. Warrior senior Nic Reed has done just that. He has made Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s TOP 100 Senior List. Nic was selected from more than 1600 senior players in the state. Further, he has been selected to participate in the TOP 60 Senior Workout. From the TOP 100, 60 seniors are selected to work out and show their skills in front of coaches from around the nation. Players that have been selected to this prestigious event in the past have include Cody Zellar, Yogi Ferrell, and Caleb Swanigan. Most of the players on the list have already made their commitments to play next year at the next level.
Nic, 6’5, 210, has a number of college offers on the table. CAI’s all-time leading scorer is taking his time in making his selection to ensure that he makes the right choice. Nic’s coach, Steve Kerberg, considers this to be a huge honor and achievement saying, “This is a big deal! I’ve had the privilege of coaching others that were selected and they ended up having great careers including playing in the pro’s overseas. This opens up so many doors.”
Warriors Swing Clubs to Victory
In only the first match of the second year since reinstituting golf, the Warrior duffers have come away victorious in a tri-match. Led by sophomores Sam Limeberry and Kevin Wang, who each shot a 42, the Warriors beat Charlestown and North Harrison by two strokes. Other scores were sophomore Zach Hampton 43, sophomore Hayden Hope 46, sophomore Dillon Kahl 54, and Freshman Carson Kastensmidt 60. This young team is definitely one to keep your eye on. Great job!!

Led by Skylar Stidam and McKenna Cavanaugh, the Warrior track team had 12 competitors set personal records in last night’s quad-meet with new Washington, Rock Creek and Charlestown. Skylar Stidam won the 1600m, the 3200m and helped the 4×800 team along with Hunter Estes, Evan Heitz, and Alexander Nash to a dominant win beating the second place team by 20 seconds. McKenna Cavanaugh, a freshman, continued her domination by winning the 800m, 1600m and the 3200m. McKenna unofficially set the CAI 1600m record…AS A SEVENTH GRADER. However, she has now officially set the record at 5.28.5 smashing the old official record by 21 seconds.
CAI Archery Team Competes at State Meet!
Congratulations to the CAI Archery Team for competing at the State meet this past weekend. This was the team’s first trip to State where they showed that Archery is definitely a Warrior sport. GREAT JOB WARRIORS!!!
