Fall Sports Registration Now Open

Dear Christian Academy Families:

It is time for the 2013 Fall athletic registrations! Please read all instructions below prior to beginning the online registration process. If you have any questions or problems, please reply to this e-mail or call the Christian Academy Athletic Office at 502-244-3225. We want this to be a convenience for you and allow us to be more efficient in the Athletic Office. (Fall Intramural online registration will be in late July)

Most of you will be very familiar with our online registration from the reenrollment process. The KORT Form, Parent/Athlete Contract, the athletic fee, and team fee will be submitted through the FACTS link. After registering online, the only item that you will have to mail in or bring by the Athletic Office is a hard copy of the completed KHSAA Sports Physical Form if you do not already have a current copy on file. Your child may not practice or tryout until the online registration is complete, athletic fee is paid, and the physical is turned in to the athletic field. The online registration will place your child on the coach’s official roster. The deadline to register is June 30th but sooner is better so that coaches can contact you with start dates/times.

Andrew Packer Signs to Play Football at Thomas More College

Senior, Andrew Packer, celebrated the last day of his senior year by signing a letter of intent to play football at Thomas More College. The signing ceremony was opened in prayer by Director of Athletics, Darin Long.

Andrew transferred to CAL his junior year and has played football since the age of seven.

“Andrew and I arrived on campus at the same time. He was a part of my first class and will always have a special place in my heart. Packer had an immediate impact for us on the field as our starting center. His toughness and willingness to play through a nagging shoulder injury the past two seasons did not go unnoticed,” said head CAL football coach, Stefan LeFors.

“Two years ago when we sat down to discuss switching schools we felt like CAL was a good fit. CAL was the perfect place for Andrew. We are thankful to CAL, the athletic department, and Coach LeFors for their support in helping Andrew play at the next level,” said Ed Packer, Andrew’s father.

“We have been welcomed by everyone here, especially the seniors on the team. We feel like we have a family at CAL. Our experience has been phenomenal and we are excited to watch him at Thomas More,” said Andrew’s mother Teresa Packer.

Andrew thanked his teammates and friends for accepting him. He also thanked Coach LeFors and Coach Lile for teaching and developing him as a player. “It’s been a good ride,” said Andrew.

The signing ceremony was closed in prayer by teammate, Austin Chelf. Andrew looks forward to playing for the Saints and plans on majoring in physical therapy.

CAL Girls Tennis Rocks at State

Ellie Gerlach (11th) and Grace Jennings (9th) were great representatives of our school and the best that CAL athletics has to offer at the State tournament in Lexington last weekend.

Ellie (4th seed) was a finalist in a very high pressure situation against Madeline Rolph (3rd seed). Both girls are fiercely competitive, both are ranked in the state, and both have met previously in high pressure USTA tournaments. Ellie won 5 matches enroute to the final, including a hard fought semifinal match against Michelle McKamey which was completed only 3 hours prior to her final match. Both of these were played indoors due to rain, which ratchets up the intensity level even more due to noise from the crowd cheering for players on multiple courts. Ellie kept her cool and fought valiantly. Unfortunately she began to suffer from cramps in her hands and legs towards the end of the first set. The final score was 6-4, 6-2. On another day with fresh legs, I’m confident Ellie would prevail against the same opponent. She is a determined young lady and will remain one of the top ranked players in the state for her final year of high school.

Grace played what many observers felt was the most exciting match of the tournament in the round of 16 against Abbie Mather. Abbie had defeated Grace in the regional semifinals and was the runner up in region 7 (losing to Ellie in the final). Grace began the match somewhat tentatively and fell behind 4-1, but fought back to a 6-6 tie and lost in a close tiebreaker. In the second set, down 6-5, she continued to play hard, attacking the ball at every opportunity. Abbie began to falter and the hard work of the two sets began to take their toll. Abbie asked for a medical time out after Grace saved a match point with a huge swing volley. The time out expired and Abbie was still having difficulty breathing, but wanted to try to play out the match (she only needed two points to win). Grace won the next two points and the score was tied 6-6. At this point, Abbie had to withdraw and Grace (and Ellie) both comforted Abbie on the bench and spent time embracing and encouraging their good friend. It was a very touching and sweet ending to a hard fought match. Grace advanced to the quarterfinals where she lost in a very close, very heated match with Rolph (the eventual champion).Grace kept her cool under pressure and played a great match losing in a 10 point tiebreaker after splitting sets.

At Wednesday’s Senior Awards ceremony, Director of Athletics, Darin Long, recognized several seniors for their leadership, character, and academic excellence while participating in varsity sports at Christian Academy.

On Wednesday, senior, Mason Paas signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse at Centre College. The signing ceremony was opened in prayer by Director of Athletics, Darin Long.

Mason has attended CAL since kindergarten and has played lacrosse since the 5th grade. He has also played soccer, basketball, and football for the Centurions.

“You can always find Mason mentoring other players. He has an intensity that pushes other players forward. I commend the decision Mason made to go to Centre. It is a great school and they have a strong lacrosse program,” said CAL head boys’ lacrosse coach, Phil Brock.

Randy and Lori Paas, Mason’s parents spoke of how thankful they are for the encouragement Mason has received from his friends, teammates, coaches, and teachers at CAL.

“We are blessed as a family to have Mason. He is an inspiration to us in a lot of ways. I look forward to seeing him play at Centre,” said Mr. Paas.

Mason chose Centre because of its small school environment and plans to major in Pre-Med.
