Christian Academy of Indiana students in grades 3 through 8 are participating in three new ILEARN Checkpoints in Math and English/Language Arts this school year. This is a new requirement by the Indiana Department of Education. These checkpoints are useful diagnostic tools designed to help teachers understand the key skills students have learned and where they need further development. We are pleased with the data we received from the ILEARN Checkpoints and are excited with how it is impacting our instruction.

What are ILEARN Checkpoints and why are they important?

  • ILEARN Checkpoints are short assessments that will be given three times during the school year: Fall, Winter and Spring; leading up to the summative ILEARN test at the end of the year.
  • The Checkpoints will assess how well students in grades 3-8 are meeting Indiana’s key learning goals for Math and English/Language Arts. Science and Social Studies will continue with the end-of-year assessments.
  • The Checkpoints will provide teachers with valuable information to guide instruction and support each student’s learning.
  • ILEARN Checkpoints will not affect students’ grades in the classroom.
  • Our students are not expected to master standards until the end of the school year when they take the summative ILEARN assessment.

What do students experience on the ILearn Checkpoints?

The ILEARN Checkpoints are online, computer-adaptive tests. This means the questions adjust to your child’s answers, getting a little harder or easier as they go, allowing us to get a more precise understanding of their performance on the specific standards being tested.

  • Quick and Focused: Each Checkpoint has 20-25 questions and is designed for rapid results. They do not include open-ended writing questions or longer projects, which will still be part of the spring ILEARN assessment.
  • Support Features: Most of the helpful tools and accommodations available on the end-of-year ILEARN test (like text-to-speech) will also be available on the checkpoints. Please note the State doesn’t provide this testing in a paper format.
  • Flexible Timing: Similar to the spring ILEARN test, Checkpoints are untimed and can be completed over multiple days if needed.

What skills and concepts are being tested?

Each Checkpoint assesses specific skills and concepts from the Indiana Academic Standards. Generally, each standard will be assessed on only one Checkpoint throughout the year building to our end-of-year proficiency on our summative test.

How do I view my child’s results?

You will be able to view your child’s individual results through a secure family portal. This portal will not only show their scores but also provide explanations and links to helpful resources to support their learning at home. You will receive a separate email that contains your child’s access code for use in the Indiana Family Portal.

Cambium’s Indiana Family Portal is available for families to view their child’s assessment results and access support resources for ILEARN (Checkpoints and Summative) and IREAD.

–The new Family Portal FAQ and Brochure provides information about the purpose of the Family Portal, how families can access it, and what resources are available for families.

Our passion is to see each student grow both spiritually and academically each day at CAI and we will use these new checkpoints to help us make academic decisions as a school. We value your partnership as we pursue academic excellence while never deterring from the truth of God’s Word.
