Megan Mintman Signs to Play Soccer at UAB

Congratulations to senior, Megan Mintman, who signed a letter of intent to play soccer for the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) on Wednesday.

Megan has played soccer since the age of three and was team captain her junior and senior years at CAL. She was also named Region 7 – 1st team (2012-2014), District Tournament team (2013), and All State – 2nd team (2014) among other awards. She has played for the club soccer team, KY Fire Juniors, for nine years.

KY Fire Juniors coach, Jaqueline Batuello, said, “I have been lucky to have coached Megan this past year and unlucky to have coached against her for four years,” (Batuello also coaches at Sacred Heart Academy). “Megan is not only very talented, but what stands out to me most is her work ethic and what a great teammate she is.”

CAL head girls’ soccer coach John Zutt, thanked the Mintmans for their support of the CAL soccer program.

“This is a special day for Megan. She epitomizes the model of a student athlete who uses the platform of athletics to honor and glorify God,” said Zutt.

Megan ultimately chose UAB because of their great academics and their talented soccer program.

“Coach Warren is a great coach and will help me improve in soccer and stay on track academically,” said Mintman.

Megan thanked her teammates and parents for their sacrifice and support. She is undecided in her major and looks forward to playing for the UAB Blazers next fall.

Congratulations to senior, Killianna Waiz, signed a letter of intent to play field hockey for Newberry College last Friday.

CAL Director of Athletics, Brad Morgan, opened the signing ceremony with prayer.

“I chose Newberry because I really like their field hockey coach. I was impressed by what the school offers academically and their student life,” said Waiz.

“This is part of what God has planned for Killianna. God has given her many talents, and today we get to celebrate the talent of field hockey,” said former CAL head field hockey coach, Jeremy Nelson. “Killianna is a great teammate, a wonderful person to have around, and a friend who sticks close. I admire that most about her.”

Killianna was joined on stage by her parents, Karen and Mark Waiz.

“Now is also a time to reflect and be thankful for the support of parents who took you to games, practices, and have spent countless hours traveling to tournaments,” said AD Morgan. “Killianna has a wonderful, supportive family.”

Sarah Rhodes Signs to Play Lacrosse at Asbury University

Congratulations to senior, Sarah Rhodes, who signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse for Asbury University on Wednesday.

“I fell in love with Asbury the first visit. I love the family atmosphere throughout the university, and I love having the ability to grow in Christ and lacrosse while receiving a great education,” said Rhodes.

CAL head girls’ lacrosse coach, John Anderson, was unable to attend the signing ceremony due to a work commitment. Former CAL lacrosse coaches, Tony Semak and Stewart Bailey, spoke on his behalf.

“Sarah has such a beautiful heart. She pushes herself and is passionate. Being a goalie is hard…it takes a person with a lot of grit and mental strength as well as physical strength. Sarah has all of those attributes,” said coach Semak.

Coach Bailey also praised Rhodes for her willingness to step up to challenges and build her game during the off season.

Asbury head girls’ lacrosse coach, Rich Manieri, said, “We recruit people more than athletes. What impresses me most about Sarah is her character. It takes a special person to stand in as goalie. Sarah is that kind of person. I’ve watched her improve over this last year and I’m excited about her joining our lacrosse program.”

Sarah’s parents, Tom and Kathy Rhodes, thanked Christian Academy and her coaches for all of their support.

“A lot of people have sacrificed their time for me. Their sacrifice has helped me become a better player,” said Sarah.

Sarah began playing lacrosse in the 8th grade and was a varsity starter last year and named All-District. She plans to major in Biology and looks forward to playing for the Eagles next fall.
