China Dow Signs With Middle Tennessee State University
On Friday, CAL senior China Dow, signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) next year.
Dow made official visits to Kentucky, Xavier, and Drake, but ultimately chose Middle Tennessee State. “Coach Insel (MTSU head coach) has been there for me from day one. He has supported me since my freshman year when he came to watch me in the LIT,” said Dow. “It is a great school and I love the coaching staff.”
China has played basketball at CAL since her freshman year and has played basketball since the age of four. She has won numerous awards including MVP, All District Team, and All Regional Team her freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Dow has been named a top ten player in Kentucky the last three years and was voted the #4 player in Kentucky in 2012. Dow led the state in scoring at 23.2 points per game as well as 11.1 rebounds.
“China will make history at MTSU,” said CAL head girls’ basketball coach, Don Rice. Rice had heard about Dow before she came to CAL her freshman year. “There is not a doubt in my mind that the Lord brought China to Christian Academy. She will be a blessing to others just as she has been to us. She’s a top-notch kid who has character. I look forward to watching her lead at MTSU,” said Rice.
Dow’s middle school basketball coach at Crosby, Jerry Durbin, also attended the signing and talked about Dow’s early years as a player. “China is a great player but an even better teammate. She does everything 100%.”
Dow and her mother both thanked her high school counselor, Ms. Blount, and all her teachers for preparing her academically for college.
Dow’s mother, Tasha Booker, said, “I thank God for giving me a daughter as special as China. MTSU won my heart from the beginning and I’m glad they won China’s too.”
In a crowded auditorium, China concluded the signing ceremony by thanking God, Coach Rice, and her teammates for their support. Dow got emotional as she thanked her mother, “Mom, you are my #1 fan. I love you.”
Athlete Profiles Now Online
Christian Academy of Louisville Athletes are accomplished individuals who compete at the highest level academically, spiritually, and athletically. Over the past ten years, our student athletes have gone on to play at over 65 colleges and universities in 22 different sports. What is so attractive about our student athletes, is that they are well-rounded individuals with the discipline, character, and training needed to compete at the next level.
I want our athletic department to be a resource and come alongside our student athletes and parents in making the decision to play at the college level. Over the last two years, we have talked to numerous college coaches and have researched various parent resource websites to try and create a specific area to meet several needs of CAL athletes. We now have an “Athlete Profile” section on the Centurion Athletic Website to help meet those needs.
http://caschools.us/centurion-athlete-profiles
Our Athlete Profiles have three distinctive areas. The “Coaches Resources” is an area where college coaches can find our coaches’ contacts, a profile of the academic standards at CAL, and previous schools that have recruited our student athletes. The “Parent Resources” section provides links to other websites that will help parents with clearing houses, academic testing, and eligibility. Finally, coaches can click on specific sports and see profiles for our junior/senior athletes that provide highlights, stats, contact information and other relevant material.
The athlete profiles are created in partnership with parents, coaches, and our athletic department. If a junior or senior athlete would like to play at the next level, we can help in creating their athlete profile. Once created, you will have the ability to send a link to your profile page to prospective college coaches.
This is our first version and we know as we continue to expand this section we will make adjustments and add additional resources. If you are interested in creating a profile, have suggestions, or any questions, please contact Hollie Foster, Sports Information Coordinator, at hfoster@caschools.us or 502-753-4554.
See you at the games!

4/5th Grade Intramural Basketball Assessment Date Changed
RESCHEDULED INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL ASSESSMENT
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5th:
6:00 – 2/3 Grade
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH
6:00 – 4/5 Grade
Parents,
I have received numerous calls regarding tonight’s (11/5) conflicts with the assessment. We rely on coaches and players to be present for the assessment to be accurate.
I know the frustration caused with moving dates and times around, but it is also necessary for the betterment of the organization of the league sometimes. Because of this, after much evaluation, we need to once again move the assessment for:
4/5 Grade Assessment: Tuesday, November 6 2012 – Rock Creek- 6pm
I realize this will be challenging for some who have made a commitment to be at evaluation tonight, but we would be doing ourselves a disservice to have the assessment tonight for the good of the league.
I apologize for the moving around of the schedule, and hope this will not entirely upset someone’s schedule. Thank you for your time:
What to expect:
– Boys will dribble, shoot a lay-up, accept passes, shoot longer distance and then a shorter distance.
– They will have time to warm-up
– They are welcome to stay around once they are done with their assessment, or feel free to leave if you have another engagement
– Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing appropriate for basketball
– Boys will go in alphabetical order based on signing up
Parents:
– Purpose of assessments is to allow the coaches an evaluation period whereby we grade their performance. Once the performance ratings are established, the coaches will work through the kids and established teams as evenly matched as possible.
– Teams will look differently, based on the coach’s preference during the team assignment.
– Coach’s kids are not given preference, as they are equally graded and placed evenly matched based on their abilities
Please direct any questions to me and I will get back as soon as possible, looking forward to a great season!

7th Grade Field Hockey Wins Championship
Last Tuesday night, our 7th Grade Field Hockey squad earned CAL’s first-ever Field Hockey Championship with a thrilling 2-1 sudden-death overtime victory over Louisville Collegiate. Goalie Sam Minrath and the rest of the squad displayed grit, determination and perseverance; and despite an onslaught of Collegiate pressure throughout the game, our girls found a way to win!
The game winning, overtime blast from the top of the circle by Alex Walker was a familiar site to CAL’s season-long fans as her shot deflected off a Collegiate stick, went airborne and stretched the net. The winning assist goes to Rachel Proffit, who executed a perfect, crisp insert on the play. And,Jamie Wright’s driving feed to a fast-breaking Claire Thomas led to the winning corner play, as Thomas was fouled as she attacked the goal.
For most of the game, Collegiate mounted attack after attack with frequent penetrations into CAL’s defensive circle and numerous penalty corners. But, on all but one late third quarter attack, Minrath and CAL defenders put up solid…often scrambling and diving…efforts to repel each attack. Minrath’s aggressive and heady play kept CAL in the game, and without her skills, our girls would not have been in position to win the game.
In the second quarter, CAL scored the first goal of the game on a corner play, following a sustained attack in the circle. After Proffit’s insert, Collegiate blocked our first two shots, but Claire Thomas was well-positioned on the far post, picked up the loose ball and lifted it into the goal! CAL took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Throughout the second half Collegiate defended every CAL attack with tremendous speed and stick skills, and found frequent success reversing the flow of the game. On one such reversal at the end of the third quarter, Collegiate managed to get the leveling goal.
An always hustling Claire Thomas, determined mid-fielderKelsey Koetsier, staunch defendersMackenzie Mellen,Tori Haygood,Emily Warlick,Adelaide Ensor and Rachel Proffit all delivered numerous stops, aided by mid-fielders Alex Walker, Jamie Wright, andNicole English. Game and season contributions byIsabel Lytle, Elise Stivers,Anna Lee Holland,Anna Gillespie, and Sloan Redding, and of course Sam Minrath made this game, and this season, a very special experience for our girls. This is now a memory that our girls will hold for the rest of their lives!
All of the CAL parents and families congratulate our team, including coaches Tom Walker, Christy Minrath, and Ellen West. The love they gave, and the discipline they instilled in each of our girls add to the Christ-centered foundation being built at CAL. Thanks to all; and Soli Deo Gloria!
CAL Wins Middle School Football District Championship

A 34-0 defeat at the hands of the Centurions on September 4. The Mustangs received the ball first to start the game. Neither team could get much going offensively in the first period. After a very nice punt by the Mustangs, the Centurions were staring at first and 10 from their own 4 yard line mid-way through the second quarter. The ensuing kickoff was returned 60 yards before Cade Sparrow had a touchdown saving tackle. The Mustangs had the ball first and 10 from the CAL 15 yard line. Jackson Schieber’s kick split the uprights to extend the lead to 14-0. The final play of the first half was capped off by a bone-crushing hit by Jake Paulson. CENTURIONS DEFEAT REBELS TO ADVANCE IN STATE TOURNAMENT
On Saturday, October 20, CAL hosted the Owen County Rebels at Centurion Field in the second round of the state playoffs. Half-way through the second quarter, the Centurions found themselves in an unfamiliar position trailing 14-0. CAL finally got on the scoreboard in the final 15 seconds of the first half when Quarterback Nick Weaver connected with Jake Paulson for a 27 yard touchdown pass. Jackson Schieber booted the extra point through the uprights. At the half, CAL trailed 14-7. After holding the Rebels to 3 and out on their first possession, CAL took over on their own 14 yard line following the Rebels punt. Jake Paulson softened the defense with a couple of very powerful runs for modest gains. Cade Sparrow ripped off a 55 yard run to set the Centurions up at the Rebels 15 yard line. Jake Paulson bulled his way to the 4 yard line. Cade Sparrow slipped into the end zone for the touchdown. CAL employed a little trickery of their own, when Christian Babin used some shake-and bake to convert the 2 point conversion. With 2:12 remaining in the third period, CAL took the lead 15-14. On their next possession, the Rebels were forced to punt after an 11-yard sack by Jake Paulson. CAL took over near mid-field. CAL methodically moved the ball down the field utilizing the running of Christian Babin, Jake Paulson and Cade Sparrow. Jake Paulson was not going to be denied and willed his way into the end zone from 5 yards out. The extra point by Jackson Schieber was good. CAL led 22-14 mid-way through the fourth quarter. Jackson Schieber blasted an outstanding kickoff and Richard Karr wrapped up the Rebel returner at the 20 yard line. Michael Lagestee sacked the quarterback for a 6 yard loss. Cade Sparrow forced a turnover on downs when he broke up an attempted fourth down pass. CAL took over with 2:40 to go in the game and maintained possession as they pushed the ball down to the 5 yard line as time expired. Final Score: CAL 22, Owen County 14.
