District Basketball Tournament Brackets Released
KHSAA has released tournament brackets for boys and girls basketball.
John Popovich Signs with Southeast Missouri State University
CAL senior, John Popovich, signed a letter of intent to play football at Southeast Missouri State University.
Popovich first came to CAL his sophomore year and began playing football and basketball. After his first year, he decided to stop playing basketball and focus on football.
“It has been a blast coaching John. He is such a go-getter. Whatever goal he sets, he achieves. His goal was to play Division I football and he not only achieved that goal, but has received a full scholarship as well. His hard work has paid off,” said CAL head football coach, Stefan LeFors.
Pete and Ange Popovich, John’s parents, sat proudly beside him as he thanked friends, coaches, and teammates for supporting him. John singled out his brother Peter for starting his athletic career and training with him.
“Today is a big day for John and a big day of gratitude for our family,” said Pete Popovich. “We are so thankful to CAL and the joy this school has brought. It’s been wonderful to see coaches, teachers, and staff who live out the motto of the school. Thank you Coach LeFors for living out your faith and helping these young men know Christ.”
John also made official visits to Indianapolis and Indiana State before choosing SE Missouri. Popovich said, “SE Missouri was a good fit academically and athletically. I really like the campus and coaches.”
John’s football achievements include All district team (2011, 2012), Defensive MVP (2012), Team Captain (2012), and the Coaches Award at the Louisville East/West All Star Game. He looks forward to playing for the Redhawks next year and plans on majoring in Business.
Kate Joss Signs to Play Soccer at Davidson College
CAL senior, Kate Joss, signed a letter of intent to play soccer for the Davidson College Wildcats next fall.
“I chose Davidson because of their academics as well as their soccer program,” said Kate. Joss plans to double major in Biology/pre-Med and Spanish.
CAL head soccer coach, John Zutt said, “This is an exciting day for Kate. This day is a culmination of many groups, individuals, and coaches who have been a part of Kate’s journey. Kate brings elements as an athlete that are hard to find in a player. She has a warrior mentality yet has such humility and a teachable spirit. Those wonderful attributes are what have brought Kate to this day. It’s truly been a privilege to coach her.”
“Kate has always been a special player. She is a great teammate and a wonderful student in every aspect of the game,” said former club coach, Tim Nowak of Kentucky Fire Club (formerly Mockingbird).
Kate’s parents, Dan and Jina Joss echoed the sentiments of her coaches. “God has gifted you with many gifts. He gave you speed and a competitive spirit. Your mom and I congratulate you on using them to the fullest effort. You have always wanted to win and have worked to do so. We are so proud of you,” said Dan Joss.
Joss has played soccer, as well as basketball, for CAL for 4 years. Kate has been a soccer team captain since her sophomore year and her achievements include All State Team (2011, 2012) and All Region Team (2010, 2011, 2012). Kate was integral in leading CAL to two regional championships in the last 3 years.

CAL Hosts Special Olympics Basketball League
Christian Academy of Louisville is currently hosting the Special Olympics Basketball League on Wednesday evenings throughout January and February. CAL has hosted the league, which includes 19 teams from Louisville and surrounding counties, for the past 10 years. Former CAL high school girls’ Health and PE teacher,Valerie Cook, was the league director prior to moving to China last year to teach English.
“We rely heavily on high school volunteers for gym set-up, score keeping, clock, gym management, and concession stand workers… many of whom are finishing their 4th year as volunteers. It’s so fulfilling to see how our high school students interact with the athletes,” said English Station Elementary Principal and League Director, Rebecca Thompson.
“Being able to serve not only humbles me, it excites me and I can hardly wait for the next game,” said CAL senior, Ryan Long, who has volunteered with Special Olympics for 4 years. “After serving with them for four years, I can easily say that the athletes that participate in Special Olympics Basketball are the kindest human beings I’ve ever come into contact with as well as some of the most athletic.”
The league state tournament is held the 2nd weekend of March in Louisville and concludes with a dance for the athletes that CAL will host on Saturday, March 9th. Games are held in the red and blue gyms at the English Station campus every Wednesday in January and February from 6:00-8:00. Come out and share in the excitement!
Rod Tabb Spirit Award Nominations Now Being Accepted
Christian Academy of Louisville is pleased to accept nominations for the Rodman Tabb Spirit Award.
Mr. Tabb was Christian Academy’s most loyal and faithful fan. His years of dedication, service, and support to CAL as a Guidance Counselor and unwavering support of Centurion Athletics serve as the foundation as we remember CAL’s greatest fan. Rarely could a Centurion athlete compete without Mr. Tabb being in attendance and never could a Centurion athletic contest be held without him knowing the outcome.
The Rodman Tabb Spirit Award was created to honor and recognize supporters, coaches, and
participants in CAL Athletics who have demonstrated their allegiance to Centurion Sports through faithfulness, sacrifice, service and Christian values. This award recognizes those who cherish and value CAL Athletics the way Mr. Tabb did – with enthusiasm, joy, love and honor. Athletic competition is based on preparation, dedication, sacrifice and effort and these traits are what help us develop into the servants God has called us to be. Rodman Tabb exemplified each of these characteristics, selflessly giving of his time to encourage and cheer on thousands of Centurion athletes.
The Rodman Tabb Spirit Award is given annually to the supporter, coach, staff member, or athlete who has exemplified the traits that Mr. Tabb taught us in supporting our sports teams.
