Zach Page Signs to Play Football at Greenville College

On Thursday, senior Zach Page, signed a letter of intent to play football at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois.

“I chose Greenville because I felt like it was a place where I could further my football career as well as my faith,” said Page. “I love their work ethic and dedication as a team and I feel that I will be a part of a very successful football program.”

Zach was named All District team his senior year and also threw shot put for the Centurion Track & Field team.

“Zach is a big part of our team. I am so excited that he can fulfill his dream of playing football in college,” said CAL track & field coach, Mike Hatfield.

CAL head football coach, Stefan LeFors thanked Zach’s parents, for their support and Zach for his consistent dedication and positivity. “I am so proud of what Zach has accomplished these last three years. Defensive tackle is a tough position to play and our entire team saw the value that he brought to our team.”

Zach’s dad, Andrew Page, complimented his son on his willingness to do whatever was asked of him. Zach’s mother, Tamara, said she was thankful for what football has done for Zach. “I still really don’t fully understand the game of football, but I understand the brotherhood it creates and how it has impacted Zach’s life. We are so thankful for how football has blessed Zach.”

Page concluded the signing ceremony by thanking his teammates, coaches, and friends for their support. He looks forward to playing for the Greenville Panthers next fall and plans to major in Criminal Justice.

Chad Carr Named New Head Boys’ Basketball Coach

We are pleased to announce Chad Carr as our new head boys’ basketball coach.

“We have a great opportunity to be a witness through our basketball program,” said Coach Carr. “My goal is to develop young men of character who can compete at not only the district level, but at the regional level as well.”

CAL Director of Athletics, Darin Long said, “We are excited that Coach Carr will be joining our staff of varsity coaches at CAL. His vision of capitalizing on our strengths and advantages at CAL will continue the rise of our boys’ basketball program.”

Coach Carr replaces Casey Smallwood, who stepped down last month after leading the program for three years. Coach Carr has been the head boys’ basketball coach at Whitefield Academy the past six seasons. He and his wife, Heather, have three children.

Colton Talley Signs with Lindsey Wilson College

On Tuesday, senior, Colton Talley, signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Lindsey Wilson College.

“I have loved Colton since my 1st day coaching him,” said former CAL head boys’ basketball coach, Casey Smallwood. “Colton puts everything he has into his play. It’s because of his work ethic that I know how successful he’ll be at Lindsey Wilson.”

Talley’s parents, Parnell and Melanie Talley, thanked everyone for their support of Colton. “It was a long road after Colton’s injury and everyone’s support and encouragement have meant a lot,” said Mrs. Talley.

Talley has attended CAL since kindergarten, and has played football and basketball. He suffered an injury his junior year resulting in a torn ACL.

“I had the privilege of coaching Colton his sophomore and junior year and watching the jump between those 2 years was incredible. He’s the type of player you can always count on. He is always in the right place at the right time,” said CAL head football coach, Stefan LeFors.

Colton concluded the signing ceremony by thanking his teammates, coaches, and friends for their support. He looks forward to playing for the Blue Raiders next fall and plans to major in Sports Management.

CAL Welcomes New Field Hockey Coach

We are pleased to announce Stanley Phulpagar as the new head field hockey coach for the Lady Centurions. Phulpagar has coached at St. Francis High School and the University of Louisville, as well as, several local club teams over the last 15 years.

“My visions and goals will ultimately depend on our athletes and coaching staff, but my personal philosophy is this: Always dream really big, pray a lot about that dream and work at it a lot more. If those dreams come true, it will be because it was God’s will; if not, at least enjoy the process of trying to achieve those dreams,” said Phulpagar

“Coach Phulpagar will bring to our program high expectations, an infectious energy, and great expertise to teach the game and build our ladies’ skills. He shares our vision of using athletics as a platform to honor Christ and build relationships for the Kingdom and serving our community,” said CAL Director of Athletics, Darin Long. “His testimony and love of The Lord is evident in his life and conversations.”

In 2001, Phulpagar was the head coach of a U.S. field hockey travel team that toured England and the Netherlands. Stanley played field hockey at Bhavan College as well as semi-professionally for Marlhorn Sports Club in Bombay, India. He is currently an assistant professor of chemistry at Ivy Tech Community College.

Phulpagar ultimately decided to come to CAL for multiple reasons. “There were a lot of answered prayers and a lot of advice from people. My wife teaches at CAL, my son goes to school there, and my daughter will be attending starting next year. It was important for me to find a perfect replacement at St. Francis School that will take care of my girls, who are like my daughters,” said Phulpagar.

“I look forward to putting Godly principles into everythingI do: Coaching and teaching (technically and scientifically). In my previous coaching experience, I would do that but very few athletes would understand or appreciate the values of those principles,” said Phulpagar.“I’m really excited to see what God can do through our new Field Hockey Family at CAL!”

Jana Costner Named Head Girls Basketball Coach

CAL is pleased to announce Jana Costner as the new head girls’ basketball coach.

“Deciding to come to CAL was an easy choice for me as a wife, mother and coach. CAL aligns with my core values. I’m excited to conduct player evaluations, to see where we are and create a plan to put them in a position to be successful for where we want to go. I look forward to establishing and building a relationship with my new CAL family as well as continuing the history and tradition set by previous players and coaches,” said Costner.

CAL Director of Athletics, Darin Long, said “We are excited about Coach Costner joining CAL Athletics. She brings a great passion for developing players and understands the strengths of our program. We are confident that she will build upon our winning tradition.”

“My vision is to win every day and to make progress each day–in the classroom, on the court and in the community,” said Costner. “My goal is to maintain our presence in the district, region and across the state. My expectation is to play with integrity, to demonstrate good sportsmanship and be disciples for Christ. These characteristics are tools that will prepare them for life in college and in their careers.”

Costner has been the girls head coach at Jeffersonville High School and the Brown School. She was an assistant at Eastern HS as well as in the Houston and Nashville areas before relocating to Louisville. She currently teaches Spanish at Jeffersontown Elementary school.

CAL Hosts Special Olympics Tourney

Last Saturday, CAL hosted the 2014 Special Olympics Louisville Regional Flag Football Tournament where 27 teams and over 290 athletes participated from all over the State.

The Tournament is a qualifying event for the 2014 Special Olympic Summer Games. Each football team must participate in at least 2 of 3 Regional Tournaments in order to qualify for the Summer Games. The Summer Games are a State Tournament event for sports such as Flag Football, Track & Field, Bocce’, Aquatics and Rhythmic Gymnastics.

“One of the main goals of this tournament is to offer athletes who have an intellectual disability a chance to play flag football against other athletes of similar ability, as well as to offer an event for CAL students to become involved with Special Olympics Kentucky,” said Erin Young, Special Olympics Program Director for Team Sports.

This year’s Summer Games are scheduled for June 6-8th at Eastern Kentucky University.

Hannah Herd Breaks Another School Record

Some outstanding performances were turned in by Christian Academy athletes, at the Louisville Track & Field Premier Classic on Friday.Topping the list was Hannah Herd, who picked up where she left off for spring break – by breaking school records.

This time it was in the 1600 meter run, as she turned in a very fast last 800 meters, to run 5:25.73. That time earned her a 3rd place medal in the very competitive race. Clara Lynch and Callie Donaldson also qualified for and competed well in the spotlight 1600 event. Kenzie Stovall picked up the Centurions only individual win for the evening, taking the high jump in 4’6″. Those four also combined to grab important team points with excellent runs in both the 4×800 and 4×400 relays. The shot put was a good event for the team, with Lilli Popovich finishing runner-up and Jed Clay grabbing the bronze. Isaiah Ragland placed well in the 110 meter hurdle event. The boys relays also were good to the Centurions, with the 4×800 (Michael Good, Wes Wegert, Jack Wegert, Brendan Sullivan) and 4×100 (Deon Reese, Luke Montgomery, Jacob Miller, Isaiah Ragland) both placing.

The team knocked off the spring break rust, by competing at the 10 team Oldham County All-Comer meet on Tuesday. Hannah Herd pulled off a double win day, taking the 1 mile and the 800 meter runs. Freshman Clara Lynch backed up the junior with her 3rd place in the mile. Young Milton Wright showed his outstanding potential by taking first in both the high and long jumps. Lilli Popovich continued to dominate in the throws, adding runner-ups in both the shot and discus.

The team looks forward to getting the seniors back this week, competing in two meets. Tuesday, the team will be in the Walden Relays and Friday will be at North Oldham.
